Project Accountant

Job Summary

The Project Accountant will be responsible for monitoring the financial progress of construction projects including the processing and tracking of invoices/billings while ensuring proper recordkeeping in the accounting system. This role will coordinate with construction management and administrators and ensure all accounting standard operating procedures and policies are followed.  

Role / Responsibilities

  • Utilize accounting software to record, store, and analyze information.
  • Perform general cost accounting and other related duties.
  • Support implementation and enhancements of job cost accounting system.
  • Participate in project budgeting and forecasting discussions and maintain required budget and forecast documentation.
  • Prepare percentage of completion calculations.
  • Process, code, and enter invoices and subcontractor requests for payment.
  • Prepare client billings and assist with the collection of accounts receivable.
  • Track all project’s costs from invoice to payment (process, code, and enter invoices, purchase orders, work orders, and subcontractor requests for payments).
  • Prepare and document items required for subcontractor check release, including Releases of Lien and Releases of Claim as required.
  • Assist with project change orders as needed.
  • Monitor and update project specific logs as needed.
  • Prepare and distribute reports as needed.
  • Evaluate the cost/benefit of potential projects including financial projections and net present value calculations.
  • Create and update processes and procedure related to project accounting.
  • Submit timely and accurate billing reconciliations to job cost.
  • Audit/reconcile the job cost detail.
  • Participate in regular team or project specific meetings as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Experience / Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or equivalent experience.
  • Proficient computer skills and in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Detail-oriented.
  • Ability to effectively analyze data.
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to prioritize among competing responsibilities.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to uphold the highest degree of integrity and confidentiality.
  • Professional and courteous demeanor.

Experience / Skills Desired

  • Construction accounting experience.
  • Knowledge of accounting software.
  • Knowledge of Office 365 – Microsoft SharePoint and/or ability to learn quickly.

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 pounds at times.
