Mechanical Maintenance Lead

Job Summary

The Mechanical Maintenance Lead works closely with and assists the Assistant Plant Manager in meeting all department needs.  This includes training and leading the maintenance crew, troubleshooting equipment problems, and leading the repair, replacement, and fabrication of equipment parts for efficient and effective sand mining operations. 

Role / Responsibilities

  • Daily coordination with managers to ensure timely completion of work orders and pm.
  • Responsible for communicating daily plant and mobile equipment repairs that are completed and pending to the Assistant. Plant Manager and Project Manager.
  • Assist with employee training to provide a safe work environment.
  • Assist in all areas of safety, personnel needs/issues, and employee discipline.
  • Assist with crew knowledge and accountability for meeting MSHA standards, such as work area inspections.
  • Adhere to all policies, safety rules, guidelines, and codes; understand and comply with MSHA regulations.
  • Work with MSHA to timely and properly satisfy compliance. 
  • Assist with completion of task training and proper documentation.
  • Safely drive and operate vehicles and equipment such as a torch, welder, pallet jack, hand truck/dolly, bobcat, telehandler, and forklift.
  •  Repair, replace and fabricate equipment parts, including dredge, pumps, hydraulics, heavy equipment, and wear parts.
  • Perform preventative maintenance inspections and service machines quickly and efficiently.
  • Oil and lubricate moving parts on machines to ensure effective performance.
  • Utilize hand tools and power tools to make necessary repairs to warehouse and shop equipment.
  • Record and report damaged, worn, or broken parts.
  • Notify Assistant Plant Manager of any and all inventory needs and assist with reorders at low or at critical levels.
  • Identify the cause of unexpected machine breakdowns.
  • Clean, organize, inventory, stock and otherwise maintain shop areas, parts, tools, and supplies.
  • Perform general housekeeping of warehouse/shop, offices, and bathroom areas; includes sweeping, vacuuming, pressure washing, weed eating, and mowing (operate push or riding mower or tractor); administer cleaning supplies, pest and weed killers.
  • Maintain successful community relations with adjacent landowners and community.
  • Represent Garcia Mining with high integrity, consistent with company core values.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Experience / Skills Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to lead a crew effectively.
  • Ability to safely operate all heavy mobile and pit equipment.
  • Ability to use hand and power tools to make necessary repairs to all equipment.
  • Ability to perform inspections and safely use equipment.
  • Post-inspection - ability to delegate required corrections and repairs.
  • Extensive knowledge of sand mining, pumping and heavy equipment maintenance.
  • Knowledge of crane rigging.
  • Knowledge of safe lifting operations for all equipment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of CFR Part 48.
  • Ability to work efficiently in a high stress, fast paced environment.
  • Ability to recognize safety hazards in the workplace and correct them.  Conform to all MSHA regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and with all levels of employees.
  • Ability to operate, detect and troubleshoot malfunctioning equipment and respond accordingly.
  • Possess superior maintenance skills to achieve 95% availability on plant equipment.
  • Mechanically inclined with great problem-solving skills.
  • Strong reading and comprehension skills; ability to read and comprehend technical manuals.
  • Organized with attention to detail.
  • Possess basic math skills, including addition and subtraction, two-digit numbers and units of measurement.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Experience / Skills Desired

  • Knowledge and experience at mining and/or construction site.
  • Some vocational or community college with related coursework or equivalent experience.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish).

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Prolonged periods standing, kneeling, bending, and climbing.
  • Must be able to bend, stretch, push, pull and move as needed to reach, clean, repair, service, and build machinery.
  • Must be able to handle physically demanding tasks.
  • Must be able to withstand continued exposure to the elements including inclement weather and varying heat/cold conditions.
  • Must be able to lift up to 75 pounds at a time.
  • Attend and participate in required training as necessary and as required by MSHA.
