Safety Manager

Job Summary

The Director of Safety is responsible for leading and managing the Garcia Companies safety initiatives and safety loss control programs and developing a safety and risk management culture dedicated to being “best in class.” Assures safety program is designed to comply with OSHA and other construction industry standards.

Role / Responsibilities

  • Lead the development of and clearly articulate the Company’s safety vision, objectives, strategies, policies, and procedures in order to build a safety culture dedicated to behaviors which lead to best-in-class results.
  • Provide proactive leadership and assume ownership of building a safety culture by (a) anticipating problems and providing solutions, and (b) sharing knowledge with, and providing training to, all levels of management, field staff, and project teams.
  • Conduct continuous safety inspections and walk-throughs of pending and active project sites to assess environmental and working conditions, determine potential and existing safety related risks, and ensure compliance with all government health and safety regulations.
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and conclusions, and monitor results to make improvements or take corrective actions.
  • Ensure safety and health training meets the needs of internal and external (clients and regulating entities) requirements, so staff have the safety training to safely perform tasks.
  • Develop annual plans and budgets for health and safety initiatives including training.
  • Manage hazard assessment activities by (a) conducting safety inspections and (b) analyzing inspection results and trending data to identify opportunities to develop preventative and corrective practices.
  • Lead and manage safety personnel.
  • Perform other duties as assigned requiring the necessary skills, knowledge, abilities, and physical requirements as required by those duties described.

Experience / Skills Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, Safety Engineering, Environmental Health, or relevant professional experience.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and techniques of safety engineering necessary to eliminate or control hazardous conditions.
  • Possess an industry relevant professional certification (i.e. OHSA 500, BCSP certification, etc.).
  • Minimum 10 years of occupational health and safety experience in an industrial environment.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience managing and leading a structured safety program.
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills.
  • Correct use of instrumentation and devices associated with safety practices.
  • Professional knowledge of all government safety and occupational health standards and regulations pertaining to the specific trade/activity being managed to include OSHA and MSHA.
  • Excellent recordkeeping abilities.
  • Desire to self-manage and assume ownership over job responsibilities.
  • Experience managing staff and third party contracted firms.
  • Dedication to continuous improvement practices.
  • Able to effectively prioritize responsibilities.
  • Must be an effective communicator generating written materials and delivering informative, verbal presentations.
  • Possession of a valid, unrestricted driver’s license.

 

 

Experience / Skills Desired

  • Proficient in MS Office suite.
  • Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).

Physical Demands / Work Environment

  • Ability to work in excess of normal work schedule in response to short-term company needs and/or emergencies.
  • Ability to develop safety standards and guidelines to eliminate or control hazards on job sites.
  • Ability to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, safety shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, fall protection harness or other personal protective equipment in designated areas of risk.
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Ability to travel throughout job sites to conduct safety inspections as required.
  • Ability to work outside in varying weather and temperature conditions.
  • Attend and participate in required training for safety on an annual/as necessary basis.
